Find a Unique Way of Living through writing Japanese Haiku
Haiku is the world’s shortest form of poetry, but it also happens to be the world’s most popular poetic form. Written in over 200 countries around the world, and very widely published in magazines, newspapers, and contests, Haiku is both easier than you think, and a bit harder, but once you really know the techniques, it will offer you great satisfaction, depth of expression, and unforgettable encapsulations of your life experiences.
Come learn from enthusiastic poet and teacher Kit Nagamura, the co-host of NHK World’s three-year show Haiku Masters and instructor of Haiku guides in Matsuyama, who will show you why Haiku is more than just a poetic form, but a way of life! You can choose from four introductory dates, to learn the history of Haiku, about some of Japan’s most famous poets, and the writing basics. Each class will then focus on a different off-shoots of Haiku, such as Photo Haiku, Haibun (Haiku with prose), and Haiga (Haiku with sketches). To get the best overall instruction, taking all four classes is recommended, but for the sake of flexibility, you can choose what works with your schedule.
Since Haiku springs from observation of the here and now, the course will include Ginko (walking and writing), and haikai (sharing and discussion of your works—the Japanese way, which is very gentle and constructive). Our workshop group will form a challenging yet encouraging and comfortable setting, with laughter and insights. Materials will be presented via power-point, and writers are welcome to ask questions at any point.
Since recent research has found that handwriting anything for 15 minutes a day offers profound mental stimulation and protection again mental deterioration later in life, why not have writing haiku be your youth elixir for 2026?
